The Film ‘Shaolin Temple’, is Jet Li’s debut, Also His Most Classic Work

As we know, 1982’s film ‘Shaolin Temple’ was unarguably one of the most classic kung fu movies in Chinese film history. As the debut showing of Jet Li, who is now one of the most famous Chinese kung fu stars internationally alongside Jackie Chan, It tells a traditional Chinese heroic story: A talented young man’s family gets slaughtered, forcing him to escape to the Shaolin Temple, seeking revenge by studying martial arts. After a series of tests and difficulties, he grows to be a national hero by saving the life of the emperor of the Tang Dynasty.

Actually, to many people’s surprise, this was actually based on a true story. This film broke several records at that time. It was the first Hong Kong-produced film that entered the mainland market and whirled away more than 100 million RMB.

19-year-old Jet Lin in 1982's Shaolin Temple

As Jet Li’s film, the very first film, Shaolin Temple is a moviewith a lot of pretty solid martial arts action! This film is definitely somewhat of a stake in the sand for Jet Li as it has a quality story backed up with some good action.  The fights really show some fancy moves and high flying kicks that make up a good acrobatic performance. The young Jet Li’s first onscreen performance was surprised and he did it well, along with the rest of the cast.

Actually, this film was an effort to help a struggling Shaoloin Temple back in 1980.  By bringing a great story to the big screen they hoped to market Shaolin somewhat and revive it’s dwindling membership. Thanks to the quality of the film, it seems to have worked!

The Classics of Kung Fu Film: Hero, Starred by Jet Li

The famous director Zhang Yi-mou had directed many well-received motion pictures such as the film ‘Red Sorghum’, ‘Ju Dou, ‘Raise the Red Lantern’, but actually, the Chinese film director didn’t attract mainstream attention in the West until he tried his hand at the Kung Fu films, then in 2002, he made the film ‘Hero’ , which starred by Jet Li and Donnie Yen.

Very fortunately, Jet Li also persuaded Zhang to resurrect the Hero project and finish the film. As we know, Jet Li’sfilms are mostly Kung Fu films, so her was also invited to star this movie, In the movie, which boasted a $17-million budget, Donnie Yen plays Lone Sky Iron Shield, part of a trio of assassins trying to kill Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di, the infamous dynastic figure who fought to unify China during the third century B.C. Jet Li plays Qin’s bodyguard.

Jet Li told the reporter before heading to China to film that he loved the script so much that when he finished reading it, he cried twice because his character Nameless has strong feelings about what’s going on, Jet Li also expressed that in his career, it’s the first script that made him cry. It’s an incredible story where drama is first and action is there to help the story.

The unique aspect of the Jet Li in Hero is certainly the way they fight without fighting. According to kung fu folklore, martial artists with powerful chi could sit in front of each other, send their spirits out of their bodies and have the spirits fight. A fighter died if his spirit died during the fight. This is the first time most Americans had seen this on-screen.

In some ways, the success of these two different approaches was measured at the box office. Hero became the first foreign-language film to open at No. 1 in the United States. It went on to gross $53 million.

The Review of the Jet Li’s Best Film ‘Fist of Legend’

Jet Li's Fist of Legend was a remake of Bruce Lee’s movie ‘The Chinese Connection’ in 1972, that’s an iconic movie, but actually Jet Li was never going to match Lee’s intense, glowering charisma. In fact, he comes off as something of a passive figure during much of this movie, only fighting because it’s the only way to handle a situation that he can understand. He never shows malice or anger.

We know, Jet Li’s ‘Fist of Legend’ is just as much a classic as ‘The Chinese Connection’, and that’s because of the fights scene in the film. It’s one of the all-time great fight movies in the Kung Fu film history, it was probably the best thing that Jet Li has ever done in his other films.

In 1994, when Jet Li and the film director Gordon Chan shoot this film, the fights in Hong Kong martial arts movies were fantastical affairs, in the film ‘Fist of Legend’, everything is fast and grounded and brutal. Li’s always been something of a charisma black hole, but he’s a star because of the way he moves, with a speed and precision and elegance that his peers just couldn’t match.

In fact, one of the strangest things about JetLi’s film ‘Fist of Legend’ is the idea that anyone wants to fight this guy at all. He’s practically a superhero, and you’d think that everyone on both sides would just want to stand back and watch him work. Instead, the Japanese are mad at him for beating up all their guys and for being Chinese, while the Chinese are mad at him for falling in love with a Japanese woman. This is one of those moments where it doesn’t exactly help to be a clueless Westerner when you’re watching these movies.

The best reason to see the film ‘Fist of Legend’ is probably its final fight scene, a long and varied throw down that pits Li against a towering and indestructible Japanese general, played by Billy Chau. This is one of those perfect fight scenes, a visceral and kinetic battle that honestly couldn’t possibly be any better than it is.

The film told the story as just about every other Hong Kong martial-arts period piece. It also put together the fact that Fist of Legend was a Chinese Connection remake. The great Yuen Woo-ping did the movie’s fight choreography, and his work in it is supposedly what got him the job in the first Matrix movie.

Jet Li’s performance in this film was wonderful, Jet Li must have been busy: He's in the film for about 30 seconds and has only one line. There are still three jokes from other characters about how short he is. Besides this film, let’s take a look at highlights from his filmography over the years.
